Behind the Story: June 2026

Behind the Story: June 2026

I'm just back from Fort Lauderdale, where I attended a massive tourism conference, catching up with writer friends and getting story ideas. It's a bit overwhelming, but I'm hoping that these meetings will shape the next year or two in terms of stories and travels. I was also nominated for a Spirited Award for my book, A Boozy History of Atlanta!

Right now, I'm working on stories about revolving bars and restaurants, the history of an Indigenous prisoner of war in Florida, a piece about my home, and a visitor guide for my home state. And one last thing. I know it sometimes looks like I have a lot of work and clips coming out. But that's just when they run. I go weeks without having much to work on, so don't let the clips fool you!

Until next month,

Caroline

An Atlantan Defends The Varsity, Atlanta Magazine

After great feedback on my story about the Beverly soda, made infamous by the World of Coca-Cola, I wanted to write a story about my love for the "tourist trap" restaurant in Atlanta, where I have so many great memories. I'm very happy with how it turned out, and it makes me want a hot dog real bad. It appears in the May issue of the magazine.

50 Unique Experiences Across The U.S. To Celebrate America's 250th, Travel + Leisure

Like every travel publication this year, T+L has released its special package on what to do around the United States in celebration of its birthday. I wrote a short piece on diamond hunting in an Arkansas state park, based on a longer piece I wrote a few years back.

I Live in the South, and I Think This Is Its Best Beach Town, Travel + Leisure

Also for T+L, I wrote about my love for Ocracoke in the Outer Banks just in time for summer. I traveled there this time last year and was immediately captivated.

The Mississippi Roots of Our Beloved Teddy Bears, Modern South

I wrote a piece a few years ago about the history of the teddy bear, but I wanted to go a bit deeper about its Southern connections for my friends at Modern South.

The Chorizo King of Idaho, Food & Wine

I absolutely loved my time in Boise and Sun Valley a few months back. Since my trip to Reno last year, I've been captivated by Basque culture in the West, so perhaps it's no surprise that I was so interested in writing about Ansots. This charming cafe is more than just good food; it's a way of connecting with a culture across the ocean.
