My side hustle is an Etsy shop and one of my previous orders came from the mother-daughter duo known as the house of id. We kept in touch over Instagram and I loved their backstory. I pitched to Apartment Therapy in late 2024 but didn't get a response. A friend shared a contact at the Boston Globe, where it was eventually placed. I spoke to the pair for a phone interview. The editor was great to work with, with minimal editing, and it ran in print and digital.
This was my second story for the Thomasville, Georgia-based magazine. I met the editor on a press trip and she reached out to me about writing for the outlet. I was assigned this piece on the famed brass band coming to the town for a music festival. I spoke to one of the band members on the phone for the story and helped source photos.
I have a longstanding relationship with this publication as my friends have been the last two editors. We became connected through the Society of American Travel Writers and my work has appeared in just about every issue. This one focused on a trip I took to West Virginia for a conference last year.
Zero Hour, Atlanta Magazine
I've been keeping an eye on nonalcoholic trends and a conversation with a friend who doesn't drink inspired this pitch. I tailored it to the local audience and placed it with Atlanta Magazine. I spoke to several distillers around the city and cold-pitched this editor I'd previously met in real life at an event.
I actually pitched this years ago to a previous editor. When a new editor came in, I pitched it to her and she told me to check back when it was more timely. I'm excited it finally got to run as I'd been thinking about why there aren't more riverside restaurants in Atlanta.
I pitched this story while I was actively on the press trip, so that was a nice perk. I traveled to the Canadian island and got to actually harvest oysters on a frozen lake and enjoy them firsthand. I pitched my existing editor and it ran fairly quickly with some of my photos.
